Oborevwori Mourns Victims of Agbor Train Tragedy, Orders Immediate Rescue Response

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic train accident in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, which claimed four lives and left 35 passengers injured.

The governor, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, described the incident as heartbreaking and a painful loss not only to the affected families but also to the entire state.

Oborevwori extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of those receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the accident.

According to the statement, the governor immediately directed the Commissioner for Special Duties, as well as the Chairmen of Ika South and Ika North-East Local Government Areas, to proceed to the scene and coordinate rescue and emergency response efforts.

He assured residents that the state government swiftly mobilized relevant authorities to provide assistance to victims and ensure effective management of the situation.

Governor Oborevwori also commended security agencies for their prompt intervention, noting that the Commissioner of Police personally visited the accident scene and deployed security personnel to safeguard passengers' belongings and maintain order.

The statement disclosed that injured victims were immediately evacuated to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, while survivors who escaped unhurt were transported to safer locations within the town. The remains of the deceased were deposited in a mortuary.

To ease the evacuation process, buses were promptly deployed to convey stranded passengers and injured victims from the accident site.

Providing an update on the victims, the Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Council, Hon. Monday Odigwe, said a total of 35 injured passengers were receiving medical attention in three hospitals across the area.

According to him, 13 victims are being treated at Central Hospital, Agbor; 12 at General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu; and 10 at General Hospital, Owa-Alero.

Odigwe further disclosed that authorities had received assurances that efforts would be made to lift the affected train from the tracks on Tuesday.

The governor prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased and urged their families to find strength in this difficult period.

He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to the welfare, safety and well-being of all Deltans, assuring that the government would continue to monitor developments and provide necessary support to victims receiving treatment.
