The Chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, Comrade Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen today urged the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel Etaifo Erale to urgently remove illegal checkpoints from the roads as well as punish erring officers found wanting as commercial tricycles, motorcycles and bus operators in Warri, Uvwie and Udu protested an alleged extortion of two hundred naira(N200) per driver by policemen on daily basis.

Agberen who made the call in a post he made in his Facebook timeline, said the extortion on motorists particularly on commercial tricycles, motorcycles and buses allegedly by some policemen is unbearable.

Agberen who drove round the DSC expressway said the alleged extortion of the N200 per driver is on every encounter with them at different checkpoints. He stressed that there are over eight to ten(8-10) checkpoints on the roads.

According to him, "With fuel hike, park tickets, and maintenance cost already killing them, Police extortion is the last straw."

Agberen noted that it is the responsibilities of the police protect the citizens and not to extort motorists just as he warned that, "If this is not stopped now, it will get out of hand."
