Burutu residents protests, accuse council of abandonment, call for chairman's suspension

Tension escalated in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State on Tuesday as protesting youths reportedly seized and beached a boat belonging to the Council Chairman, Chief (Hon.) Dr. Julius Takeme amid demonstrations over alleged poor governance and failing social services.

The action is the latest in days of protests by residents who are demanding better healthcare, basic infrastructure, and accountable leadership in the riverine LGA.

The protesters accused the council administration of abandoning critical areas, particularly healthcare delivery and road infrastructure, leaving communities in worsening conditions.

According to the demonstrators, the council has failed to meet the expectations of the people despite repeated appeals.

The youths and other residents have called on Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and the Delta State House of Assembly to urgently intervene in the crisis.

They are demanding the immediate suspension of the council chairman pending an investigation into the allegations against his administration.

“We are calling on the state government to investigate these allegations and take appropriate action in the interest of Burutu people,” one of the protesters said.

As of press time, there was no official response from the Council Chairman or the Burutu Local Government Council regarding the allegations or the incident involving the boat.

The ongoing protests have raised concerns about governance and service delivery in the LGA, with residents insisting that urgent steps are needed to restore public confidence.
