Navy Uncovers Hidden Crude Oil Dump in Delta, Recovers 17,000 Litres
Personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta have uncovered a sophisticated crude oil theft operation in the creeks of Delta State, recovering about 17,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil from a carefully concealed storage site.
The discovery was made during Operation Delta Sentinel, a sustained anti-crude oil theft campaign launched to combat economic sabotage and protect Nigeria’s critical oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta region.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Naval Information, Commodore Abiodun Folorunsho, the operation was carried out following credible intelligence on suspected crude oil theft activities around the Ugbokodo Creek axis of Delta State.
Folorunsho explained that naval personnel, supported by aerial surveillance assets, initially conducted a detailed search of the area, which appeared free of suspicious activity at first glance.
However, further analysis of drone imagery exposed a large reservoir that had been deliberately concealed beneath layers of leaves, wooden planks and dense vegetation in an attempt to evade detection.
“Although the location initially appeared free of suspicious activity, further observation and analysis of drone imagery revealed a large freshly dug reservoir deliberately concealed beneath leaves, planks, wood and thick vegetation to evade detection,” the statement said.
Subsequent exploitation of the site led to the recovery of approximately 17,000 litres of products suspected to be stolen crude oil stored within the camouflaged reservoir.
The Navy noted that the site bore clear evidence of recent crude oil theft activities and was believed to have functioned as a temporary storage facility within a wider illegal supply network.
“The discovery highlights the increasingly sophisticated concealment methods being adopted by criminal elements to sustain crude oil theft operations,” Folorunsho stated.
He, however, emphasized that the Navy’s growing deployment of intelligence-led operations and advanced aerial surveillance technology has significantly improved its capacity to identify and dismantle illicit oil theft networks across the Niger Delta.
According to him, the recovered products, reservoir and associated materials were handled in line with established operational procedures, effectively denying criminal elements the resources needed to sustain further illegal activities.
“The Nigerian Navy remains committed to sustaining pressure on crude oil theft networks under Operation Delta Sentinel through persistent surveillance, intelligence-driven operations and coordinated actions aimed at protecting Nigeria’s critical energy infrastructure and economic interests,” he added.
Crude oil theft continues to pose a major challenge to Nigeria’s economy, resulting in significant revenue losses, environmental degradation and disruptions to oil production. Criminal syndicates have increasingly adopted sophisticated techniques, including underground storage facilities and illegal pipeline connections, to siphon and conceal stolen crude.
The latest breakthrough underscores the Navy’s determination to curb oil theft and safeguard the nation’s economic assets in the Niger Delta.
