Nigerian Army approves model defence school for Delta State
The Nigerian Army has approved the establishment of a Model Defence Comprehensive School in Delta State, according to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa.
General Musa made the disclosure on Monday in Asaba during a courtesy visit to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. He was represented by the Chief of Defence Administration, Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan.
Rear Admiral Akpan explained that the initiative is part of a nationwide plan to establish Model Defence Comprehensive Schools across the six geo-political zones of the country. Delta State, he said, has been selected to host the school for the South-South zone.
He stated, “There has been a decision before now to site a Model Defence Comprehensive School in the six geo-political zones of the country. The one for North Central is already at a very high level of completion, and it is in Kaduna State. I am also delighted to report that the one for South-West is located in Ondo State. So, this particular trip is to inform the Governor and the people of Delta State that we have found it worthy to choose Delta State as a location for the South-South project worthy in all respects because of the normal transformative leadership style of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.”
He added, “We are really happy to be here today, and we are very glad that we have been given the opportunity to meet with the Governor and also very key, important state officials. We thank the Governor for opening the door for this massive project that will bring the whole country to Delta. It is something that Deltans will be very proud of.”
Receiving the delegation on behalf of Governor Oborevwori, the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, expressed excitement over the state’s selection to host the school. He assured the Chief of Defence Staff of the state government’s full cooperation to ensure the speedy take-off of the project.
“This is a big honour, and as a government and as a people, we wholeheartedly welcome this development,” Onyeme said. “It is a thing of joy that out of the six states that make up the South-South, you chose Delta. We thank you and want to assure you that Delta is a peaceful state and we will continue to do our best to make it peaceful.”
He further noted that the state would provide all necessary support to make the school’s establishment a reality. “We are not taking this for granted. We will give you every cooperation for this school to come to be as fast as possible. If there is any area that you want us as a government or as a people to assist you, just let us know,” he added.
The visit ended with mutual assurances of collaboration between the Delta State Government and the Defence Headquarters to ensure the timely implementation of the project.
