UPU eulogises departed Ohworode of Olomu, pays respect

The Urhobo Progress Union, UPU, the apex socio-cultural body of the Urhobo nation, has paid glowing tributes to the departed Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom, HRM M. O. P. Ovbagbedia during the final rites of passage yesterday at Ovwor-Olomu.

The UPU, led by its President-General, Chief Ese Gam visited the Olomu Kingdom to officially pay homage to the people of Olomu over the passing of the revered monarch, who died at the age of 91.

Speaking during the rites of passage, Gam described the late monarch as a father figure to all Urhobo people and a symbol of peace, wisdom, and unity.“

"The Ohworode was not only the spiritual and traditional head of Olomu Kingdom but also a towering figure across all of Urhoboland,”

He stated. “His leadership, values, and moral clarity provided a compass for the entire Urhobo nation. His transition marks the end of an era, but his legacy lives on.”

Also present at the event was the Otota of Olomu, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje SAN who paid his own homage and thanked the UPU for its continued support and recognition of the traditional institution.“

It is with humility that I pay homae to the great monarch. His reign laid the foundation upon which we must now build. I thank the UPU for honoring his memory and for standing with the Olomu people during this time.”

The UPU delegation included prominent sons and daughters of Urhobo land, traditional chiefs, and cultural ambassadors. 

The visit featured traditional rites, cultural performances, and moments of solemn prayer for the peaceful repose of the departed king.

The forum of Urhobo kingdom Presidents-General also paid homage and performed passage rites. 

Olorogun Moses Taiga, the Adjerese of Olomu kingdom along other prominent Olomu greats were present to receive the UPU leaders.
