The Federal Polytechnic, Orogun, Delta State, has recorded a major milestone as the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) granted full accreditation to three of its pioneer programmes and approved additional streams for nine others. The development marks a new phase of growth and underscores the institution’s steady march toward academic excellence.

The accreditation, conveyed through official letters signed by the Director, Polytechnic and Allied Programmes Department, Dr. (Mrs.) Fatima Kabir Umar, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of NBTE, Prof. Idris M. Bugaje, followed the Board’s Digital Accreditation Verification Visitations from 16th to 18th September, 2025. According to the letter, the National Diploma (ND) programmes in Accountancy, Business Administration and Management, and Statistics were granted full accreditation for five years, effective from the 2025/2026 academic session.

In addition, the NBTE approved additional streams for nine out of the twelve existing ND programmes, thereby increasing the Polytechnic’s carrying capacity significantly. The affected programmes include Accountancy, Business Administration and Management, Marketing, Mass Communication, Civil Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, and Science Laboratory Technology each now having two streams to double their student intake.

Announcing the news during the 17th Management Meeting of the institution on Thursday, October 16, 2025, the Rector, Prof. Duke Okoro, described the achievement as “a remarkable milestone that signals the dawn of a new era for the institution.” He expressed profound gratitude to the NBTE for the confidence reposed in the Polytechnic and commended the management, staff, and students for their collective commitment to excellence.

“We are truly excited by this news,” Prof. Okoro said. “The full accreditation of our pioneer programmes, coupled with the approval of additional streams, clearly shows that the NBTE recognizes our steady commitment to providing quality technical education. This milestone strengthens our resolve to position Federal Polytechnic Orogun as one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions of technological innovation and research.”

Prof. Okoro further noted that the accreditation reflects the institution’s compliance with national academic standards and its focus on producing skilled, employable graduates capable of driving Nigeria’s industrial growth. “This achievement is not just a victory for the Polytechnic, but for the entire Orogun community and Delta State at large. We are building an institution that the nation can be proud of one that combines sound academic delivery with industry-driven innovation,” he added.

As part of the Polytechnic’s expansion plan, the Rector revealed that preparations are underway to present twelve new academic programmes to the NBTE for resource verification ahead of the 2025/2026 session. The proposed additions span engineering, technology, management, agriculture, and the creative arts including emerging fields such as mechatronics, renewable energy, computer engineering, film and television, music, multimedia studies, crime management, public administration, procurement, and cooperative economics.

According to him, the initiative reflects a deliberate strategy to diversify the Polytechnic’s academic portfolio and align its training with the evolving manpower demands of Nigeria’s economy. “We are expanding strategically,” Prof. Okoro emphasized. “Our goal is to diversify our academic offerings to meet the emerging manpower needs of the nation. These new programmes, once approved, will further enhance our contribution to national development and innovation.”

The Registrar, Mrs. Christine Aluyi, also commended the dedication of academic and non-academic staff who worked tirelessly to meet NBTE’s standards, describing the accreditation as “a collective triumph that reflects the institution’s culture of excellence, discipline, and teamwork.” In the same vein, the Polytechnic Librarian, Prof. Edwin I. Achugbue, highlighted the NBTE team’s commendation of the institution’s robust library resources and digital learning infrastructure, which he said would support advanced teaching, learning, and research.

Reaffirming management’s commitment to sustain and exceed NBTE standards, the Rector assured that preparations for the next round of accreditation in 2026 would commence early. “We won’t rest on our oars,” he stated confidently. “Our vision is to become a model Polytechnic that sets benchmarks for others to follow. With this accreditation and our expanded capacity, Federal Polytechnic Orogun is firmly on the path of progress.”
