FG–State Collaboration: Oborevwori Flags Off Reconstruction of Warri–Sapele–Benin Dual Carriageway
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday performed the groundbreaking for the reconstruction of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Dual Carriageway in Uvwie and Okpe Local Government Areas, describing the project as a symbol of renewed collaboration between the Federal and State Governments for the collective good of Nigerians.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Governor Oborevwori said the initiative represents “another major step forward in the infrastructure renewal drive of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government, in partnership with the Delta State Government.”
He described the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road as a critical national route linking major South-South cities and providing access to Edo and other parts of the country.
“The section we are flagging off covers a dual carriageway with reinforced concrete pavement, expanded shoulders, and extensive stormwater drainage systems all designed to enhance durability and ensure the safety of road users,” the governor said.
Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the project reflects the value of intergovernmental cooperation, noting that “development happens faster when governments work together in the interest of the people.”
He also disclosed that the Delta State Government has paid ₦10 billion in compensation to accelerate the Second Niger Bridge access road project, which aims to improve traffic flow between Asaba, Onitsha, and adjoining communities.
Lamenting the hardship faced by commuters on the Warri–Sapele–Benin route due to its long-standing deterioration, Oborevwori expressed confidence that the project would enhance mobility, reduce travel time, spur trade, and improve security.
“Criminals often exploit bad roads to commit crimes. Once completed, this highway will make movement safer and boost the response of security agencies,” he stated.
Reaffirming his commitment to infrastructure, peace, and security, the governor also pledged to address requests from residents of Uvwie Kingdom regarding the Mother and Child Hospital and the provision of a 500KVA transformer.
“At over sixty years of age, I am not here for personal gain but to leave legacies that future generations will remember. By the time I leave office, I want Deltans to proudly say, ‘Oborevwori did this, Oborevwori did that,’” he added.
The Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, described the project as the brainchild of a visionary leader, noting that the 10km stretch five kilometres on each side features an 8.8-metre-wide carriageway per lane, exceeding standard specifications.
He said the project is expected to be completed within 12 months, marking another milestone in Delta’s infrastructure transformation.
The General Manager of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Engr. Thomas Feng, assured the state of quality delivery and timely completion, describing the project as a “renewed era of infrastructure that will foster safer travel, stronger connectivity, and economic growth.”
Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council, Chief Anthony Ofoni, announced that Airport Road, Effurun, will be renamed Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori Way in honour of the governor’s people-focused leadership.
Also speaking, HRM Emmanuel Sideso, Abe I, the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom and Chairman of the Urhobo Council of Traditional Rulers, commended the governor for prioritizing key infrastructure projects that have revitalized Effurun and Warri.
Similarly, Okakuro Mike Afe, who represented the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, lauded Oborevwori’s developmental strides and prayed for his successful completion of an eight-year tenure to consolidate the gains of the MORE Agenda.
The event attracted senior government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, and captains of industry, who all hailed the initiative as a beacon of renewed hope and progress for Delta State and beyond.
