Nation Mourns as Leaders Condemn Killing of Arise News Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu
Tributes have continued to pour in from political leaders, state governors, security agencies, and media stakeholders following the tragic death of Arise News anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu.
Maduagwu, 29, was killed in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, during a robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja. Her death has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over Nigeria’s rising insecurity.
President Bola Tinubu, First Lady Remi Tinubu, Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and several governors expressed deep sorrow over the young broadcaster’s passing.
In a statement on X, Obi described the incident as “heartbreaking,” stressing that it underscores the urgent need for the country to prioritise the safety of its citizens.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic and untimely death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a brilliant young anchor with Arise News, who was killed in the most painful circumstances during a robbery attack in Abuja,” Obi wrote.
“At only 29, Somtochukwu had already distinguished herself as a gifted broadcaster and trained lawyer whose voice engaged, informed, and inspired many. Her loss is not only a personal tragedy to her family and colleagues but also a huge blow to journalism and to our nation.”
Similarly, Atiku Abubakar extended his condolences to Maduagwu’s family and the Arise News team. He prayed for comfort for all those affected by the tragic loss.
The Presidency also issued a statement mourning the young anchor, describing her death as “a painful reminder of the urgent need to tackle violent crime in the country.” President Tinubu called on security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, along with other governors across the federation, also condemned the killing and urged for swift justice.
Maduagwu, a trained lawyer turned broadcaster, had quickly risen to prominence as one of Arise News’ brightest talents. Colleagues described her as passionate, dedicated, and fearless in her work.
Her death has reignited calls from civil society groups and media professionals for urgent reforms in policing, security intelligence, and community safety.
As investigations continue, Nigerians are left mourning a young life cut short in its prime — and demanding stronger action to protect citizens from unrelenting insecurity.
