Stop comparing Nigerian Police with US Police, right activist, Agberen to Nigerians

Following the killings of Charlie Kirk by a shooter, a human right activist, Comrade (Amb.) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen said Nigerians should stop comparing men of the Nigerian Police Force with their counterparts in the United States of America, USA.

This is contained in a statement sent to Our Correspondent in Warri by Comrade Agberen.

He said,"You can't give what you don't have, as Nigerian society doesn't have what it takes to produce a good police force.

"People should stop running their mouths anyhow. Go and visit police stations, barracks, and see the deplorable conditions where they live and raise their families."

According to him,"How the Police were quick to identify Kirk’s shooter, even though it was Robinson’s father who arrested and handed him over to the police, an act Nigerian parents would rarely do but would aid and abet their children."

He said,"That alone shows the gaps between American and Nigerian society; two distinctive systems.

"When you compare the Nigerian police with USA it should be a holistic comparison; welfare, equipments and how US citizens treat their policemen and women.

"The salary of a US constable is well over N2million:- What about insurance?
- What about the education of their children?- What about their salaries and other benefits?- What about déäth in active service and retirement plans?"

Comrade Agberen noted that,"Even in the US, crimes are committed years before an arrest is made.

He stressed that,'The government and police authorities put in so much effort and money to investigate and unravel crímès, which is the direct opposite in Nigeria. You cannot talk about an ideal police force when the society itself is not ideal.

'The average policeman is a mirror of every society. If the society is good, it will produce a good police force, but if the society is bad, like ours, where even churches are corrupt, it will be almost impossible to have ideal policemen.

"Why are governors, senators, and high-class individuals refusing to let their children join the police recruit or academy? Instead, they use its opportunities as compensation to their communities, to which they have allocated slots.

"If the police force were transformed today, you would rarely see the son of a nobody in the police academy; instead, it would be flooded with the children of the high and mighty, while the children of commoners would only be given opportunities in recruits or no privileges, just as it is with the federal and state civil services."
