EFCC Links Ex-NNPC Boss to Frozen NGO Accounts

Former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has been interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja over allegations of financial misconduct during his tenure.

Kyari arrived at the EFCC headquarters around 2:15 pm on Wednesday and, while walking into the building, made a brief statement to journalists:

I have done my part; the EFCC must do theirs. When each of us does our duty without fear or favour, with honour, respect, and commitment Nigeria moves forward.”

The development comes after the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the temporary freezing of four Jaiz Bank accounts linked to Kyari, following an application by the EFCC.

In August, Justice Emeka Nwite granted a 30-day freeze order short of the 60 days requested by the EFCC with the option of renewal if necessary. The accounts under scrutiny include two in Kyari’s name and two belonging to a non-governmental organisation, Guwori Community Development Foundation Flood Relief.

According to an affidavit deposed by EFCC investigator Amin Abdullahi, preliminary findings showed that suspicious inflows amounting to ₦661,464,601.50 were traced to the accounts. The Commission alleges that the funds are proceeds of unlawful activities linked to oil deals during Kyari’s stewardship of NNPCL.

The investigation stems from a petition filed on April 24, 2025, by the civil society group Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law. The petition accused Kyari of conspiracy, abuse of office, and money laundering.

EFCC investigators disclosed that bank records suggest the accounts were being managed through Kyari’s family members, allegedly acting as fronts. The anti-graft agency maintains that further scrutiny is ongoing to trace the source and utilisation of the funds.

The matter has been adjourned until September 23, 2025, when the EFCC is expected to present a progress report to the court.
