A human right activist,Comrade(Amb) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen today commended Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for banning house and land agents as a measure to curb rising rent in the State saying,"he made the right decision.

This is contained in a statement sent to Our Correspondent in Warri by Comrade Agberen.

He said the move is replicable considering the pains it has caused families seeking housing and property in recent years.

Comrade Agberen said the governor should also utilize the remaining months to provide employment opportunities, training and skills acquisition to the people of the State especially the unemployed youths and housing agents.

Comrade Agberen added that they should be supported with financial loans since housing agencies have been one of the few self-employment opportunities people easily venture into without reasonable capital.

According to Comrade Agberen,"While housing agents are being criticized for exploiting residents with exorbitant fees for properties they do not own, landlords and property owners must also share the blame.

"The levies imposed on apartments as rents for tenants are often excessively expensive.

"The amounts demanded for drinks for landlords, the brand and quality of drinks they expect, caution fees, security fees, sanitary fees, and lawyers’ charges are unnecessarily high".

Comrade Agberen opined,"That’s where the agent’s greed commences, as they assume that families or individuals who can afford such rents can also meet their excessive requirements as levies."

Comrade Agberen also called on the Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori led Delta State Government to examine the steps taken by the Ebonyi State Government in terms of housing and property agency, but strictly to regulate its operations/activities.

"It would have been preferable if the State Government could also intervene in the high rents imposed on tenants by landlords/property owners.

The rents should also be regulated or, better still, slashed. Housing agents and property owners in Delta and other states should learn from the decisions reached by the Ebonyi State Government to cut costs in the name of agent fees to avert possible decisions as a measure to curb rising housing and property demands in respective States".
