The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the Asaba Twin Mega City project, a signature urban renewal initiative under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda aimed at transforming the state capital into a modern, flood-resilient economic hub.

During a site inspection of the six-lane access road connecting the two cities Asaba Waterfront City and Niger City the Special Project Director, Barr. Victor Ebonka, emphasized that the project will be a “game-changer” for Delta State in terms of economic growth, infrastructure, and urban planning.

"What used to be a wasteland, unbuildable and unfit for farming due to constant flooding is now being transformed into a livable, world-class environment,” Ebonka said.

The two cities are being developed by North China Construction Company and Foklands Nigeria Limited under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state government. The firms are tasked with land reclamation and infrastructure development, while the government is providing the main access road.

Ebonka confirmed that full compensation had already been paid to individuals with legitimate claims in the project corridor and warned of immediate demolition of any illegal development by trespassers.

"We have received reports of individuals, including those who were compensated, trying to return to the land. Let me be clear any illegal construction will be pulled down. The Ministry of Lands and other relevant agencies have been notified,” he said.

According to Ebonka, Asaba Waterfront City will span approximately 352 hectares, while Niger City will cover 423 hectares both equipped with advanced infrastructure including underground power, sewage systems, and flood control.

He also noted that land ownership opportunities will be open to all, with an estimated 10,000 plots available once land subdivision is completed.

"Everyone is eligible to own land here. This project is not only solving an environmental problem it’s opening the door to economic opportunities and urban expansion,” he stated.

Ebonka praised the technical capacity of the developers, saying their expertise in flood-prone land reclamation makes them ideal for the terrain. He added that major infrastructure rollout is expected by 2028, with Niger City already two years into active dredging work.

The project is also expected to extend the six-lane road to the River Niger, improving regional connectivity.

Speaking during the inspection, Mr. Akindele Israel of North China Construction Company and Engr. Mike Nwachukwu of Foklands Nigeria Limited affirmed their readiness to deliver the twin cities as scheduled, describing the initiative as a revolutionary leap for Asaba’s capital territory.

"This project isn’t just about construction. It’s about vision, resilience, and progress for Delta State,” they said.
