Identification, detention of policemen who assaulted young man will serve as deterrent-Group

A civil society group,the Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancement (ISRCA), also known as “No Justice, No Peace”today said the identification and detentions of policemen who allegedly assaulted and violated the human rights of a young man should serve as deterrent against such behaviours. 

Police Public Relations Officer,SP Bright Edafe in a statement signed and sent to Our yesterday confirmed the arrest of the policemen by the Delta State Police Command.

ISRCA National Coordinator, Comrade(Amb.) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen made the assertion in a statement today. The group cautioned police officers whose habits it is to abuse and violate human rights to desist from such behaviours. 

The group said," such behaviors wouldn't be condoned considering several disciplinary actions that has been previously and still being enforced against erring officers."

It added that,"Police Officers in the habits of abusing/violating human rights should desist from such behaviours as such wouldn’t be condone, considering several disciplinary actions that has been previously and still being enforced.

"According to eyewitness, they allegedly searched the young man at hospital road, Asaba. 

"As they were making attempts to search his bag, he told the officer that he should not put anything in his bag that he should show him his hands and that’s how they reportedly started beat!ng him. 

"The Officers involved have all been identified and the Commissioner Of Police Delta State Command; CP Olufemi Abaniwonda has taken action against the Police officers seen assaulting and brutalizing the young man in Asaba. 

"All officers involved have been detained at the Nigeria Police Force Delta State Command."

The group states that,"Police officers must also understand that they’re members of the civil society and after retirements, falls back to the same society. The guns and uniforms are symbols of responsibilities and services to humanity to one’s country: not tools for oppression and brutality."
