We can’t stay silent: Rep Clement Jimbo urges National Assembly to call out vague court judgements

Abuja federal lawmaker Clement Jimbo has sounded the alarm over what he calls a dangerous rise in ambiguous court rulings, urging the National Assembly to step in and caution the judiciary.

Speaking on a motion of personal explanation during Tuesday’s plenary, the All Progressives Congress (APC) representative from Akwa Ibom warned that murky legal decisions are fueling political instability and eroding public trust in the justice system.

“Judgements that allow multiple interpretations where one side claims victory and the other insists the same judgement supports their case are fundamentally flawed,” Jimbo declared. “This kind of conflict breeds confusion.”

Citing leadership crises in opposition parties like the Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Jimbo said unclear court verdicts are inflaming internal divisions and stalling party cohesion.

He called on his fellow lawmakers to urge the judiciary to deliver rulings in "plain, unambiguous English" with clear reasoning accessible to every Nigerian not just legal experts.

"As members of parliament, it is important for us to advise our judiciary that judgements of courts should be simple, with clear explanation and simple English devoid of any ambiguity,” Jimbo said. “So that any party that reads the judgement can understand and derive one interpretation.”

He warned that legislators cannot afford to turn a blind eye.

“We are elected to make laws for the progress, prosperity, and security of our nation,” he added. "And where judgement from our court is undermining that responsibility, it calls for concern. We can’t sit aloof.”

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, acknowledged Jimbo’s remarks and noted them for the record.
